ABOUT:
The Young Professionals Committee of the UNIFEM-USNC Metro NY Chapter will be hosting leadership training for young professionals.  This program will tap expert leaders in the non-profit and for-profit worlds who are committed to women's leadership and advancing gender equality to share their experience and skills with the next generation of non-profit managers and practitioners. The training will be a series of interactive workshops that focus on innovative strategies, best practices, and management skills in order to prepare participants to take on leadership roles and responsibilities within the non-profit sector.

Sex Trafficking in Women and Girls: A Global Phenomenon

 

A phenomenon know as "modern day slavery," sex trafficking has become increasingly pervasive.  The panel will feature experts in the field who are working to promote awareness of this horrific issue and combat human trafficking.  Panelists will provide an overview of the problem on the international level, and examine the steps being taken to address the problem and bring the trafficked victims to safety.

In Recognition of Women's History Month Present

Very Young Girls

Very Young Girls is an expose of human trafficking that follows thirteen and fourteen year old American girls as they are seduced, abused, and sold on New York's streets by pimps, and treated as adult criminals by police. The film's unprecedented access to girls and pimps will change the way law enforcement, the media, and society as a whole look at sexual exploitation, street prostitution and human trafficking that is happening right in our own backyard. Rachel Lloyd, Founder and Executive Director of GEMS, will facilitate a discussion following the screening. Producer/Director: David Schisgall

After fifteen years of leadership at the World Bank and sixteen years as President of the Board and CEO of Women's World Bank, Nancy is pursuing a new initiative.  Nancy Barry Associates (NBA) is today mobilizing the private sector to generate enterprise solutions for poverty by: collaborating with the leaders of companies to construct and to develop innovative and competitive models of businesses that incorporate a great numbers of small producers and companies as suppliers and distributors; compel emergent entrepreneurs to create franchises in order to incorporate thousands of micro entrepreneurs in lucrative opportunities of business so that, in the best case they will seek solutions to social and environmental problems at the same time; mobilizing master's students in business schools towards investigating enterprise solutions that fight poverty and implement these initiatives.

 

Nancy is advisor to Harvard Business School in the 'Social Companies and Poverty' initiative, which she helped create. She has received numerous awards for her leadership and innovation and recently received the Forbes Trailblazer Award and was named by Forbes as one of the world's most powerful women in 2004 and 2005.  In 2006, US News and World Report named Nancy Barry one of America's 20 Best Leaders.  This year, she was named one of Harvard University's 100 graduates with greatest influence and impact.
